About the SHSAT
The SHSAT, the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test, is administered by the New York City Board of Education and is the only criterion for admissions to the eight New York City Specialized High Schools.

Who Takes This Test
Eighth and ninth-grade New York City residents only.
What Will Be On the Test
The exam tests both verbal and math skills. The verbal section has about 45 multiple-choice questions and includes scrambled paragraphs, logical reasoning, and reading comprehension. The math section has about 50 multiple-choice questions and includes arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
Length of the Test
Both the verbal and the math sections are 75 minutes each.
When You Should Take It
This test is offered in late October or early November for eighth graders, (October 29th and 30th in 2011), and mid-November for 9th graders who previously sat for the eighth grade exam but were not accepted into a NYC Specialized High School, (November 5th in 2011).
How to Register
To register, you must file an application with your guidance counselor.
